DESCRIPTION:A day of touring the SNA. \nWhere: Iron Springs Bog SNA\, MN Trunk Highway 200\, Clearwater County. See map. \nWhen: Saturday August 15\, 2026 (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM) \nLeader: Rhett Johnson\, MNDNR\, Minnesota Biological Survey. \nThe field trip will be led by Rhett Johnson and will involve exploring the native plant communities on the SNA\, including Mesic Hardwood Forest NPCs\, Forested Peatland NPCs\, Wet Meadow\, and an upland prairie restoration on the adjacent University of Minnesota property. Waterproof boots are recommended. \nAs always\, this field trip is for members of the MN Native Plant Society only and will be limited to 10 registrants; pre-registration is required. \nIn the event of potential bad weather\, participants will be notified of any changes to the day. \nTo register for this field trip\, email Ken Arndt.

SUMMARY:Spruce Budworm and Minnesota's Spruce-Fir Forests
DESCRIPTION:This meeting will be on-line through Zoom only. MNNPS members\, check your email for instructions. \nThursday\, October 15 7:00 PM. \nPresenter: Eric Otto – Forest Health Specialist\, MN Dept. of Natural Resources \nDescription: The eastern spruce budworm is a native caterpillar and currently one of the most destructive forest health issues in Minnesota. It has impacted an extensive amount of our spruce-fir forests historically and in recent years\, primarily in northeast Minnesota. This presentation will discuss the identification\, biology\, history\, impacts\, and the work currently being undertaken to manage for spruce budworm. \nBiography: Eric Otto works as a forest health specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources covering northeast Minnesota. He works on multiple insect and disease issues impacting tree and forest health in that region. He previously volunteered for the Peace Corps in Ghana working in agriculture\, and has also worked seasonal forestry positions in Minnesota\, Wyoming\, and Maine. He holds a Ph.D. in plant pathology and a B.S. in forest resources\, both from the University of Minnesota.
